Whisker Math

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

This week we have been speculating about what the Whisker Fairy does with our whiskers. We wonder if before sticking them into her body she measures them. (To understand that you have to read our earlier post about the Whisker Fairy.) This is kind of what we were imagining it would look like if that was what she did:

Just imagine that this is 16 of our whiskers lined up. (Of course, Zoe doesn’t really have 16 of our whiskers in a collection because the Whisker Fairy takes them as we drop them.)

The average length of these hypothetical whiskers is 6.65625 cm. That is 2.62057087 inches.

The longest one is 8 cm (3 inches), and the shortest one is 4 cm (1.5 inches).

Sasha, I bet that the shortest whiskers would be yours and the longest ones would be mine!

FUN FACT:

When squirrels feel threatened, they run away in a zigzag pattern. This is useful to escape hawks and other predators. It doesn’t work so well with oncoming cars. Slow down for squirrels!
