Camera Trapping

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

This week we have been helping Zoe’s mom test her camera traps. She is going on a trip to Zanzibar soon so we decided to help her by pretending to be wild animals that her camera trap could take pictures of.

I was a leopard. And I was a lion.

Some of you might not know what a camera trap is. Well, it is a camera that you can set up in the woods to take pictures of animals. It has a sensor so that it automatically takes a picture of anything that has bodyheat or moves in front of it. This way a human doesn’t need to be at the location of the camera while it takes pictures or video 24 hours a day.

Here are the pictures that Zoe and her mom got of us from camera 1:

And these were the ones that they got from camera 2:

It will be exciting to see what pictures Zoe’s mom will get of Zanzibar’s wild life!

FUN FACT

In 2003 Zoe’s mom and dad were the first people to get photographs of a live Zanzibar servaline genet.

Here is one of the pictures of the genet:

Squabble

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

We have been squabbling. It all started when Lola said that my tail was not as nice as hers.

That’s not what I said! I just said that my tail was longer and fuller and bushier than yours.

That is just like saying that your tail is better than mine!

No, it isn’t!

Yes, it IS!

NO!

YES!

Ok, ok. Let’s put this squabble on hold and show our readers what we look like when we squabble:

Let’s face it, we look like idiots.

Maybe you do, but I don’t.

Ok, I get that you’re upset.

Yeah. I’m sorry…

Me too.

And I guess this is what we look like when we make up:

Yeah.

FUN FACT:

Every year, nearly four million cats are eaten in Asia.

I thought these facts were supposed to be fun.

Well, we can’t be perfect every time.

Cat House Masters

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

This week we have been SO generous!

Care to elaborate a little for our readers, Sasha?

Well, to just mention one extremely generous thing we did this week, we let Zoe and her friend Giovanna make a cat house for, yes, another cat. To be specific, they made it for a tiny gray and white kitten named Hugo who lives in Giovanna’s neighbor’s house.

That’s right! That’s just how nice we are. It was worth the sacrifice when we saw the pictures and videos of how much Hugo ended up loving it!

Here are some pictures and a video of the completed palace before they surprised the kitten with it:

You can see Giovanna’s cat, Totoro, also being generous as he helps the girls by giving it a test run:

Hugo especially liked the “get-away clear room”. Because he could get away from the dog, Rosie, but still see and interact with her:

High five Sasha! We just made the world a better place!

Lungfish can live out of water for several years. It secretes a mucus cocoon and burrows itself under the unbaked earth. It takes in air with its lung through a built-in breathing tube that leads to the surface. A lungfish has both gills and a lung.

The Flappy Game

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

I have been playing this really fun game with the cat door!

Oh, so that is that weird thing you have been doing with the cat flap. I was getting a bit worried that you were going crazy or something.

So, how do you play this game then, Lola?

Well, I go up to the cat flap, then I paw at it 20 or so times, and then I go through the cat flap and go outside. And then I have won the game!

Sounds, um, easy.

That’s where you are wrong. It is actually quite dificult.

Well, good for you, Lola.

Thanks. I am very proud of myself!

Ok, well, I give up.

And here is a video of me demonstrating how I play:

The oldest cat video on YouTube dates back to 1894 (when it was made, not when it was uploaded, duh).

Encounter Of The Furred Kind

WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO:

We have been taking the summer life easy and relaxed while the humans have been doing their summer cleaning.

I was hanging out on the balcony watching the warm wind blow in the grass.

And I was chilling by the roses in the windowsill, watching Lola.

On this one day it was so hot that the humans opened all the doors. And at that moment a certain neighbor cat grabbed his chance!

I saw him running across our garden and around our house towards our front door!

He was coming into our house!

I ran through the house to the front door to scare off this intruder!

Some of you readers may remember him from earlier posts. If not, read about it here, here, here, here and here.

He was now inside our house and someone had to do something about it. So I ran up to Amadeus, who was standing in the hall, and I gave him a fierce hiss!

roses13

And he ran away like a little wimp like he does every time there is an encounter with him.

Well, that’s not quite what happened.

Yeah, ok, it didn’t hurt that Zoe chased him out. But my hiss was what sent him running.

Good job, Lola.

Thanks! I’m feeling quite proud of myself now.
